It's not easy being NYPD detective Lincoln Rhyme, the foremost criminologist in the NYPD. First of all, he's a quadriplegic who can move but a single finger. Secondly, he's forever being second-guessed and mother-henned by his ex-model-turned-cop protégé, Amelia Sachs, and his personal aide, Thom. And thirdly, it seems that he can't motor his wheelchair around a corner without bumping into one crazed psycho-killer after another. Plenty of spine-chilling (as in graphic) forensic detail. Rhyme's brainpower and high-tech tools, plus Sachs's legwork make for an unbeatable combination.

Eminent psychiatrist Jason Frank, who has "the body of a runner, the brain of a scientist, and the good looks of a Kennedy," acts as an unofficial police consultant on high profile cases. Lt. Sigrid Harald has no intention of being the Detective Bureau's token female officer, and after a year and a half she has proven herself capable to her grizzly-bear of a boss, Capt. McKinnon, who bears the guilt of surviving the day his partner (Sigrid's father, although she doesn't know it) was killed in the line of duty. She is partnered with the cherubic-faced Charles Tildon whose methodical eye for detail-legend had it that he once used three sheets of paper to describe an ordinary cocktail glass-can be exasperating, but Sigrid prefers him to the hotshot macho types who resent taking orders from her. Although she in no way resembles her beautiful photographer mother, she catches the eye of famous artist Oscar Nauman, who although nearly twice her age has a free-wheeling spirit that makes Sigrid feel older than he.

Lt. James Sakura lives a relatively quiet life at home with his blind wife, Hanae, but his work as a homicide detective (serial killer cases seem to be his lot in life) has an unfortunate way of threatening that serenity. Tough and callous Kathleen Mallory (don't even try to call her Kathy) was once a wild street urchin who was adopted by cop Louis Markowitz and his wife, Helen. She grows up to become a cop like her adopted father, although she is still not altogether civilized now that she is a sergeant in the Special Crimes section where she is more comfortable in the company of computers than in the company of men. She operates by her own inner compass of right and wrong and a sense of justice that drives her in unpredictable ways. When Markowitz is murdered by a serial killer, Mallory buries him and then, while on compassionate leave, methodically tracks the killer.

With more than 30 years under his belt veteran Lt. Jacob Nueman is 250 lbs and dresses in bright, uncoordinated synthetic fabrics. Sgt. Robert Redfield is young, well-tailored, looks like Al Pacino and sleeps with every reasonably attractive woman he meets. When the thin blue line between law and order blurs, Sgt. Joe Cullen goes to work. He is part of the department cops hate: the IAD. He polices the police, judges the judges, and arrests his own if he has to. He is partnered with Neil Zimmerman, a late-model New Age cop who indulges in a high-tech language Cullen can barely understand, using words like "input, "interface," and "odometerize" (as in "It's six-tenths of a mile shorter to take Queens Boulevard to your house. I odometerized it.")

Joe Keough, a renegade cop who has been dumped at an out-of-the-way Brooklyn precinct, begins to suspect the truth. When the task force assigned to the case ignores his theory about two killers he enlists the help of crime reporter Mike O'Donnell.
